On 29 March 1969, the New People’s Army was established under the absolute command of the Communist Party of the Philippines, in order to advance and complete the people’s democratic revolution against US imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat capitalism. Forty five years on, Filipino revolutionaries have overcome the most violent forms of reaction, including 14 years of the Marcos fascist dictatorship and the successive post-Marcos pseudo-democratic regimes, persevered and scored victories in the People’s War.

Concerning the maritime dispute of the Philippines and China

Interview with Prof. JOSE MARIA SISON
Founding Chairman, Communist Party of the Philippines

By ROSELLE VALERIO
Liberation International

1. Why do you support the Philippine reactionary state in invoking the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and pursuing an arbitration case against China before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), particularly in the Arbitral Tribunal based in The Hague?

Jose Maria Sison (JMS): What I support is not so much the Philippine reactionary state as the invocation of the UNCLOS and upholding the sovereign rights of the Philippines and the Filipino people over the 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as well as the extended continental shelf (ECS) in another 150 nautical miles from the outer limits of the EEZ. Thus, I have urged the Philippine government to act promptly on the matter.

By ROSELLE VALERIO

1. From a previous position of exercising the right to national self-determination, to the extent of fighting to secede from the Philippine state, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has surrendered itself to the sovereignty, constitution and constitutional processes of said state and has opted for regional autonomy under the Philippine state. Is that true?

Jose Maria Sison (JMS): The leaders of the MILF themselves have confirmed the fact by their own words and deeds. The Bangsamoro Basic Law and all the agreements and annexes covered by the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) and Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) are subject to the 1987 Constitution and constitutional processes of the Philippine state. The Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GPH) has publicly assured the MILF that the Philippine constitution can accommodate the Bangsamoro Basic Law and the Bangsamoro political entity without resorting to constitutional amendment.
