Typhoon Ruby survivors must stand up against government neglect, economic backwardness, exploitation and environmental destruction

Typhoon Ruby (international name Hagupit) battered the Philippines on 7-9 December. While not as powerful as last year’s Yolanda (Haiyan), typhoon Ruby’s strong winds and torrential rains caused widespread damage along its path. The typhoon caused the biggest damage in Eastern Samar and parts of Northern Samar. It also caused damage in northern Panay, parts of Negros, the islands of Marinduque, Masbate and Mindoro, and in Sorsogon, Batangas, Laguna and Quezon provinces.

Before Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) swept through the Philippines, the Communist Party of the Philippines enjoined all revolutionary forces in areas along the supertyphoon’s path to mobilize the people and bring them to safer ground. The National Democratic Front of the Philippines-Eastern Visayas today expressed support for the movement of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) survivors against President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, and said it is “a movement to bring a criminal to justice for repeatedly violating the rights of the people. The reason why the Yolanda survivors are agitating against Aquino is that he should have been thrown out of office and into prison right after Typhoon Yolanda last 8 November 2013,” said Fr. Santiago “Ka Sanny” Salas, NDFP-EV spokesperson.
